Tech Explained: Virtual Reality - Springwise

What are the negative effects of using virtual reality (VR)?

1. Dizziness and nausea

Dizziness and nausea are common among users who are trying to use virtual reality (VR) for the first time. This is because the body and the mind are adjusting to the situation. Dizziness and nausea that occur while playing virtual reality (VR) makes you feel like you are getting drunk while driving a vehicle.

2. Eye and hearing health problems

Besides dizziness and nausea, physical health issues that can occur while playing virtual reality (VR) are tight, dry nerves in the eyes. This especially happens when we use virtual reality (VR) for too long. The eye has its own capacity for work and naturally needs rest. But in addition to the eye, the ear is also used when using virtual reality. Users will usually take the volume of virtual reality to the next level to experience the thrill of the virtual world more. So that the sound of virtual reality technology buzzes very loudly in the user’s ears. Loud noise also causes hearing damage.

3. Trauma

Psychological problems can also be caused by virtual reality (VR). An example is when we play games full of blood, or play war games too often. Virtual reality (VR) can create atmosphere and experience when used, just like in the real world. Of course, playing murder games too often can cause both short and long term trauma.

4. Excessive self-isolation

Virtual reality (VR) dramatically reduces social interactions. The problem that can arise is excessive self-isolation. Sometimes when playing virtual reality (VR) we feel the same as when we are in the real world. Sometimes it even makes us want to interact with other humans because it’s too comfortable to use this technology.

5. Addiction and excessive imagination

The longer the user is comfortable with VR, this will indirectly lead to addiction and therefore they will want to use it continuously. Long-term use of virtual reality also causes users to have over-imagination due to the image effects of virtual reality itself. This can endanger psychological health.

Can you communicate with ghosts of deceased people using VR technology?

A TV show in South Korea recently used virtual reality (VR) technology to reunite parents and their deceased children. In case the mother of the child wears virtual reality and could meet her dead child and even touch and talk. While this appears to be beneficial and may address the overwhelming need of those who are gone, experts have warned ethics against conducting radical psychological experiments on television for entertainment purposes.

It can have the potential to become dependent on someone, preventing them from letting go of what is gone and the heartache hindering the healing process. There must be ethics in all the programs broadcast on television. This method can be unhealthy because you don’t know what the next psychological impact will be after the event ends. This will cause the person to experience deep grief on several occasions, not just that it is the right of the deceased. Does the deceased wish to be brought back to life digitally? Who controls their speech? How can the conversation be manipulated without permission? This must be considered and unethical.

What is the right solution for the growing use of virtual reality (VR)?

Speaking of solutions, in fact, it cannot be denied that virtual reality (VR) technology has revolutionized the way people do things. The thing to remember is that virtual reality (VR) isn’t just used by millennials. Users ranging from children to adults. In fact, there are also people over 50 who actively use virtual reality (VR) for some purpose. However, keep in mind that users should be advised in the use of virtual reality (VR) technology. Because not many people are addicted to using virtual reality (VR) to cause various problems in their life.

So what is the right solution to solve this problem? The presence of virtual reality (VR) can of course be seen as an achievement in technological evolution. On the other hand, however, there are problems. One is for health issues, long term use of VR affects the health of the eyes and ears. The intensity of VR use should therefore be greatly reduced so that the eyes and ears do not have to work for a long time and often continuously. The negative effects of VR also cause dizziness and nausea caused by prolonged use of the VR headset. Oculus Rift and HTC Vive also recommend that users take a break every 30 minutes with a VR headset for 10 to 15 minutes. Additionally, virtual reality (VR) dramatically reduces social interactions. The problem that can arise is excessive self-isolation. When playing virtual reality (VR), sometimes users feel the same as when they are in the real world. This gives a comfortable feeling that many virtual reality (VR) users don’t even want to communicate with other humans anymore. For this we must limit the use of virtual reality (VR). While playing virtual reality (VR) is fun, we still need to take the time to meet and interact with people in the real world. In this way, we can overcome excessive self-isolation through the use of virtual reality (VR).

Another thing we need to be aware of is that this technology is designed for positive purposes in different areas, so we need to be able to provide filters for ourselves and others when using this virtual reality ( VR). We must be strict in the decision to use this technology. What is very important is that we have to be ethical when using virtual reality (VR). This tool should not be used for an interest which is even used for profit, but which transcends ethics. If we are correct in providing filters for the use of virtual reality (VR), we will have a positive impact in accordance with the purpose of its creation.

VR therapy was performed on soldiers who served in Afghanistan, it was found that approximately 30% showed a significant increase in changes in the scale of PTSD administered by clinicians, although there was no significant difference between systemic therapy and VR therapy, but changes in PTSD scale score sufficient to show reduction in PTSD with therapy. This is consistent with a study by Greg (2011) where, out of a number of soldiers who suffered from PTSD and received VR therapy for 7 sessions, showed a reduction in PTSD symptoms, 62% of patients reported that the therapy was very helpful (Mclay & Wood, 2011). Research by Hernandez (2010) also indicates that VR therapy can be given to children with cerebral palsy, the therapy is designed as a game to make it easier for children to enter a simulated environment.

Virtual reality (VR) is a very advanced technology and very useful in various fields for the present and the future. However, more and more sophisticated technology will undoubtedly have a negative impact if overused. Therefore, in order to reduce the negative impact of this technology, we must understand the usefulness of the technology and not abuse the real advantages of this advanced technology so that it does not harm us.
